67 Law Enforcement Officer Fatalities Nationwide in First Half of 2014



The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund issued a new report today saying 67 officers have been killed in the line of duty during the first half of 2014—a 31 percent increase over the same period last year.

Of the 67 officers, 26 were killed in traffic-related incidents; 25 were killed by gunfire; and 16 died due to job-related illnesses and other causes.

Three Indiana law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty so far this year.

In Gary, Officer Jeffrey Westerfield, a 19-year veteran of the police department, was killed July 6th while responding to a call.

Indianapolis Metro Police Officer Perry Renn was shot to death July 5th.

And, Tipton County Deputy Jacob Calvin was killed in an accident on June 28th.
