IL: Governor Signs 'Ban the Box' Fair Hiring Bill

Governor Pat Quinn signed a new law Saturday ensuring fair hiring practices in Illinois.

The law prevents criminal background checks until an employer has reviewed whether an applicant is qualified for the job.

It does not apply to certain jobs like security and construction.

Quinn says the state needs to put people to work and everyone deserves a shot.

Illinois is the fifth state in the country to pass so called “Ban the Box” legislation.

It takes effect in January.
