An Illinois couple was seriously injured Thursday afternoon when their mini-van slammed into the rear of a stopped semi-tractor trailer on US 41 northbound in Fort Branch.
The Gibson County Sheriff's Office says 87-year-old Leonard Knowles and his wife 87-year-old Doris of Mount Carmel, Illinois were extricated from their van and flown to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
The driver of the semi-tractor, who was from Ohio, was not injured.
WFIE-TV in Evansville reports Leonard Knowles told investigators he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
The accident happened while the semi-tractor trailer was stopped due to clean-up of an earlier accident further up the highway near State Road 168.
Northbound US 41 was closed for about two-hours for the accident investigation and clean-up.
