The AAA Hoosier Motor Club says national and Indiana gas prices are up significantly compared to this time last year. The nationwide average for regular unleaded now stands at $3.67. Spokesman Greg Seiter says that‘s the same for Indiana. The nationwide average is up 20 cents compared to exactly one year ago and Indiana prices are up 27 cents compared to the holiday weekend last year. Still, Seiter says nearly 35 million Americans are hitting the road alone this holiday weekend. Seiter says unrest in Iraq and the looming hurricane back east are to blame for the spike. He says prices should drop back down after the holiday ... especially if the situation in Iraq subsides and the hurricane dies down.
