Indiana Faces Dept. Of Education Waiver Deadline

Indiana's department of education faces a very important deadline today.

The state is expected to prove that it can correct several shortcomings identified by the U.S. Department of Education to keep its waiver from federal education standards.

"The Indianapolis Star" reports state Superintendent Glenda Ritz is submitting several amendments to the waiver today to try to get the state a one-year extension.

If the feds pull the waiver, the state would lose flexibility on how to spend hundreds of millions in federal funds aimed at low-income children.

It would also face very tough requirements in meeting English and math proficiency for all students.
