City of Washington Receives Traffic Signal Pre-Emption Grant
Washington Mayor Joe Wellman says the city has received a grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation to modify traffic lights at 13 intersections to automatically give emergency vehicles clearance.
For instance, Wellman says the traffic lights will turn red for cross traffic as a fire truck approaches the intersection.
He says the estimated cost of the project is $236,500, with the grant paying up to 90% of that cost.
The City’s required match would be $23,650.
The Mayor says studies show that accidents are reduced up to 70% and response time reduced as much as 20% with this type of improvement to intersection signals.
