Tobacco Cessation Month

The Knox County Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Coalition urges pregnant County women not to smoke during pregnancy.

The message is part of May's Tobacco Cessation month.

The smoking rate for pregnant women in Indiana is 17 percent-- almost double the 9 percent national rate.

In Knox County, the rate is over triple the national rate-- at 29 and a half percent.

The rate was compiled in the latest survey in 2011.

Coalition officials say quitting can lower risk of respiratory illness, miscarriage, stillbirths, and infant deaths.

Also, kids from smoking families are twice as likely to smoke themselves when they get older.

More information on quitting is available at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
