Indiana State Police are investigating the circumstances behind the death of an 11-month-old Loogootee infant. The child’s babysitter placed the child into a car seat and buckled the child in Wednesday afternoon. Police sat the babysitter then realized the child needed a change of diaper. The babysitter unfastened the crotch buckle of the seat, and left the room to get another diaper. The babysitter said she was gone from the room for no more than two minutes to retrieve the diaper and refill a drink for another child. Upon her return, she found the child had slid down in the seat and became asphyxiated by the upper portion of the seat harness. The babysitter contacted emergency aid and attempted to perform CPR on the child until first responders arrived. The child was eventually pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed today. No identities are being released at this time. The case remains under investigation.
