Waterman Defeated in GOP Primary
39th District State Senator John Waterman was defeated in Tuesday’s Republican Primary by Washington financial advisor Eric Bassler by 359 votes.
Although Waterman won five of the seven counties in his district, a large block of voters in Daviess County, Bassler’s home county and a win in Knox County, tipped the scales in Bassler’s favor.
Bassler has no opposition in November.
Waterman has served as state senator since 1995.
He previously served as Sheriff of Sullivan County from 1986 to 1994.
Meanwhile, Erin Houchin won the Republican nomination for State Senate District 47 by defeating Harris Whitis.
He will take on incumbent Richard Young Jr. in the fall.
District 47 includes parts of Crawford, Dubois, Harrison, Orange, Perry and Washington Counties.
Mark Messmer won the Republican nomination for state senate district 48.
He will face Democrat Larry Vollmer in November.
District 48 includes parts of Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Pike, Spencer and Warrick Counties.
Mike Braun won the GOP nomination for State Representative District 63, the seat Mark Messmer now holds.
Braun has no opposition in the fall.
District 63 contains parts of Daviess, Martin, Dubois and Pike Counties.
