Gibson County’s E-911 Dispatch Center now has texting capabilities. Sheriff George Ballard says Central Dispatch now has a program that will be able to text a person if they inadvertently dial 911, or are unable to safely speak on the phone. The service will be especially useful for persons who may be a victim of a home invasion or other crimes where it may compromise the caller’s safety to speak on the phone. Gibson County E911 Coordinator Lisa Viton points out that that Gibson County Dispatch has to initiate the text feature. The general public cannot text in to 911. You must first dial the number. Viton says once you receive a text from Central Dispatch and you confirm it’s an emergency; give your address as quickly as possible so help can be dispatched.
