Illinois residents should enjoy their soda pop while they can because state lawmakers are looking to make them pay more for the indulgence. Illinois Senator Mattie Hunter says adding a penny tax to every ounce of soda pop will help curb obesity and other health issues. Putting it into perspective, the tax would add nearly three-bucks to a case of pop. Opponents say raising the price could ultimately be a jobs killer because people will stop buying the products. That means distributors will eventually scale back on their workforce because they won’t need to produce as much. The proposal is expected to come up for debate in the next few weeks.
