Plan Would Test Lawmakers, Public Aid Applicants For Drugs
One Illinois lawmaker says he's willing to take a drug test, so long as people asking for welfare have to do the same.
State Representative Bill Mitchell says he doesn't want to persecute people who are down on their luck, but he says they shouldn't be getting public aid if they're abusing drugs.
It’s not the first time Mitchell has made the suggestion.
He's introduced the bill a couple years in a row.
He admits the proposal probably won't clear the legislature this time around either, but he says his main objective is to start the larger conversation about Illinois' spending priorities.
