Two IU Health Patients Die of Legionnaires Disease

Officials at Indiana University Health say they‘ve detected legionella bacteria in a room inside one of their campus facilities in downtown Indianapolis.

Infection Control Medical Director Dr. Doug Webb says they found the bacteria in a water sample.

Webb says two patients may have died from legionella pneumonia among other complications.

Webb says they’re not certain whether the patients came into the hospital in the past month with the illness or whether they actually acquired it in the facility.

He adds they think legionella pneumonia may have contributed to the death of one patient, but they‘re not sure about the other.
