Cash-for-Gold Regulations

It may be more difficult to operate one of those cash-for-gold businesses in Indiana.

Under a law that took effect with the new year, all stores that offer cash payments for gold jewelry or other types of gold have to register with the Secretary of State's Office and pay a registration fee of $100.

The law was passed by the General Assembly last year with the aim of helping police catch jewelry thieves who quickly cash in what they stole at cash-for-gold businesses, which have become common in some neighborhoods.
