Hoosiers Urged to Prevent Kitchen Fires

"Prevent Kitchen Fires" is the theme of Fire Prevention Week in Indiana.

State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson says kitchen fires are the most common type of fir and are easily preventable.

Greeson says when firefighters are called to a kitchen fire they're often told by the residents they only left the kitchen for a few minutes.

He says a few minutes is all it takes for a fire to start.

In 2012, fire departments in Indiana responded to more than 1,500 cooking fires.

Most kitchen fires occur from unattended cooking.
