Mourners Pay Tribute to Dr. Phillip M. Summers

Thirty-three years to the day after Dr. Phillip M. Summers was inaugurated VU’s 18th President in 1980, he was laid to rest Thursday in Vincennes.

Hundreds attended his funeral in VU’s Red Skelton Performing Arts Center—a building he championed during his 21-year presidency.

Dr. Summers passed away Sunday at the age of 74.

He served as the 18th President of VU from 1980 to 2001.

At the conclusion of Thursday’s services, it was announced that Lothian Skelton, the widow of Red Skelton, made a $50,000 donation this week to the Red Skelton Museum of American Comedy at VU, in honor of Summers.
