Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped and held as a captive by a homeless street preacher for nine months in Utah, visited Vincennes University Friday to raise awareness about abductions and sexual abuse.
The 25-year-old presented the keynote address to high school seniors attending a College GO! Week event at Vincennes University's Red Skelton Performing Arts Center.
Smart told students if people don't talk about abuse, it will continue to happen.
She says she hopes her story inspires others.
The then-14-year-old was taken from her bedroom in 2002.
Brian David Mitchell was convicted of Smart's kidnapping and assault.
He's serving two life sentences at a federal prison in Arizona.
Vincennes University's College GO! Week helps Hoosiers of all ages plan for college completion and career success.
