The fall harvest is underway in some parts of Indiana .. and soon will be in other areas..
Dr. Debra Phillips, a professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, says farmers can avoid potential medical injuries during the harvest season by taking safety precautions …such as wearing a respirator…
Phillips also says farmers need to use caution around harvesting machinery to avoid getting hands and arms caught in augers and power takeoff shafts.
Farmers should also undergo cancer screenings every year due to exposure to chemicals.
She says fire extinguishers should be close by to put out fires touched off by machinery and dry debris from the harvest.
And, Dr. Phillips says families need to make sure their children stay safe when doing farm chores.
