Federal Judge Orders Halt to Cross Display

A federal judge has halted the City of Evansville from permitting the erection of a display of crosses on public property.

Judge Sarah Evans Barker issued the ruling stating that the display conveys an endorsement of religion that violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

The ruling comes five weeks after the ACLU of Indiana filed suit on behalf of two Vanderburgh County residents.

The display was to be 31 six-foot-tall crosses on a stretch of road near the riverfront.
