First Human Case of West Nile Virus Reported for 2013 Season

The State Health Department says Ripley County has Indiana's first human case this year of the West Nile Virus.

Mosquitoes have been found to be carrying the virus in nine counties including Vanderburgh and Vigo.

West Nile can result in a mild fever accompanied by aching, swelling or a rash.

But it can also lead to encephalitis, meningitis or other severe syndromes.

State health officials suggest precautions like the use of insect repellent including DEET and discarding old tires, tin cans, ceramic pots or other containers than can hold water.
