Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation Thursday in hopes of raising awareness and boosting research for diabetes.
One of the new laws creates specialty license plate to increase awareness of the disease that affects more than 800 thousand people in Illinois.
State Department of Public Health Director Lamar Hasbrouck says the public needs to take notice of the problem.
A second new law requires the state diabetes commission to submit a comprehensive report to the Illinois legislature every other year detailing the social and economic costs of diabetes and efforts to prevent the disease.
