Illinois Teens Must Notify Parents Before Having Abortion

The ACLU of Illinois is disappointed in a ruling that requires teenage girls in Illinois to notify their parents before having an abortion.

Lorie Chaiten, Director of Reproductive Rights, says most teens already involve a parent, but some just don't have that option.

The Illinois Supreme Court handed the decision down yesterday when it upheld the Parental Notice of Abortion Act, ending an 18 year debate over the issue.

Opponents argue it's unconstitutional for the state to demand a teen tell a parent about the procedure because it violates her privacy.

But the court disagrees, claiming abortion is not protected under the state's privacy clause.

The law takes effect in just over a month and will require doctors to notify parents about what's going on.
