Lawrence Co. Animal Shelter Fire

The investigation continues today into a suspected arson fire that destroyed the Lawrence County, Illinois Animal Shelter in Pinkstaff early Tuesday morning

All of the animals were set free and a number of items were taken from the shelter, including a small amount of cash.

Most of the animals have been rounded up.

Shelter Director Mark Chamness says Lawrence County's Animal Shelter is a kill shelter; something he says is unfortunate but necessary.

However, he says investigators don't believe that has anything to with the fire.

Chamness says the county may consider rebuilding the shelter closer to Lawrenceville.

However, he says it will be at least two months before a new building can be finished.

The investigation is being handled by the Illinois State Fire Marshal's office.
