IL: House Pension Plans Overwhelmingly Fails in the State Senate

A comprehensive pension reform plan approved by the house suffered a major defeat in the Illinois Senate Thursday night.

The bill failed miserably, winning just 16 yes votes.

Opponents, like Senator Linda Holmes of Aurora, argued the measure is unconstitutional since it reduces retirement benefits.

Senate democrats prefer a bill from Senate President John Cullerton that offers workers a choice about paying more or receiving fewer benefits.

But it doesn't save as much money as the house version.

Governor Pat Quinn is asking the senate to reconsider its vote.
