Hoosier Medal of Honor Winner to Be Honored Again

An Indiana Congressional Medal of Honor winner for valor in Vietnam will attend the dedication of an exhibit in his name at the Indiana War Memorial.

Sammy Davis of the Owen County town of Freedom will attend the ceremony today in downtown Indianapolis, along with Governor Mike Pence and former Governors Joe Kernan and Edgar Whitcomb.

On November 18th, 1967, then-Pfc. Davis ignored reported warnings to take cover and instead used a machine gun and artillery to return fire against a Viet Cong attack near Cai Lay.

Davis, a non-swimmer, then used an air mattress to cross a river and rescue three wounded soldiers before refusing medical care and joining another howitzer crew.

He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Johnson the following year.
