Illinois Pays Down Unpaid Bills by Four Billion Dollars
The State of Illinois has brought in enough extra cash to pay off about four billion dollars worth of unpaid bills.
The backlog now sits at just under six billion dollars, but Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka says it may not be that low for long.
Topinka says the state can speed up the process of getting out of debt if lawmakers make smart and sensible cuts in the budget, stop borrowing money, get a real balanced budget, and live within its means.
She also suggests getting rid of duplicate services by combining state agencies and offices where possible.
