Bill Raising Illinois' Highway Speed Limit to 70 MPH sent to the Governor

Illinois lawmakers are sending the governor a bill raising the interstate speed limit.

The measure boosts the highway speed limit from 65 miles per hour…to 70.

It's sponsored by State Representative Jerry Costello of Red Bud.

But opponents worry this would just make people drive even faster and even further over the speed limit.

The legislation does let Cook and surrounding collar counties, as well as the Metro East area, to opt out of the higher speed limit.

It must be signed into law by Governor Pat Quinn to take effect.
