Knox Co. Sheriff Urges Schools to Act on School Security Grants

Knox County Sheriff Mike Morris is urging schools to apply for matching grants to hire trained and armed school resource officers to improve school safety.

Under a new state law, matching grants of up to $50,000 dollars are available to any school.

Morris says recent school shootings, including the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, demonstrate the need for additional security..

The bill also calls for better communication among state agencies to identify threats.

For example, schools are to be notified if there is any arrest of a student who is suspected to have mental problems.
