Indiana State Police arrested an Evansville woman Friday for acting as an unlicensed midwife for an infant who died the day after she was born. State Troopers arrested 64-year-old Alice Gates on preliminary charges of practicing nurse-midwifery without a license. She was released on bond from Posey County Jail. Police say Gates provided prenatal care to a 21-year-old Mount Vernon woman and was present during the child's birth back in December. The mother never had an ultrasound or blood tests. Police said Gates told parents that the baby's breathing problems weren't severe, but the following day she stopped breathing and died.
