Illinois Recovers $38 Million From Unemployment Cheats

The Illinois Department of Employment Security has collected nearly 38 million dollars from benefit cheats.

I-D-E-S Director Jay Rowell says the state was able to recover the money from 22 thousand individuals this year by garnishing state and federal tax returns.

He says they want to send a loud and clear message that you can't get away with unemployment benefit fraud.

This is the second year the state has been able to recover funds through tax returns.

Rowell says every dollar they get back helps to lower business taxes.
