A Sullivan County couple faces federal charges for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from Jefferson Township in Sullivan County.
U. S. Attorney Joe Hogsett says 51-year-old Frank Mejean, hired his wife to be the Township Clerk and Investigator after he was elected Township Trustee.
Hogsett says together they inflated their salaries, over compensated payment on contracts to each other, and doctored documents to the State Board of Accounts in an effort to cover up the fraud.
Specifically, they are accused of overpaying Frank Mejean by over 47-thousand dollars and Antonnette Mejean by nearly 24-thousand.
In addition, they are accused of overpaying a lawn care contract with Antonnette by over 22-thousand dollars and funneling township money into Frank Mejean's plumbing business.
