The Indiana Senate approved a bill Tuesday designed to better protect Hoosiers from scammers.
The measure is sponsored by State Senators Brent Steele of Bedford and John Waterman of Shelburn.
It would make it a misdemeanor for someone to knowingly manipulate or block their caller ID with the intention of causing harm to, wrongfully obtaining anything of value from or obtaining personal information from the caller.
The practice, commonly called "spoofing," enables the caller to make it appear like someone else is placing the call, such as an insurance or banking company.
The bill now heads to the house for further consideration.
