The Indiana Department of Transportation continues to monitor the settling of pavement on the new stretch of Interstate 69 near the Pike-Gibson County line. The subsidence, close to the Patoka River between the State Road 61 and State Road 64 exits, is blamed on old underground coal mines.
Cher Elliot with the Indiana Department of Transportation says highway engineers expected some settling, but did not know how fast it would occur.
Elliot says the depression is not deep enough at this time to be a major concern.
Due to extensive underground mining in the area, INDOT chose to use asphalt instead of cement for that section of the highway because it's more flexible.
