Melon Accident Ties Up Traffic



Northbound US 41 near Patoka was closed for about an hour Monday when a pick-up truck struck the rear of a slow moving tractor pulling three wagon loads of watermelon.

Indiana State Police tell the Princeton Daily Clarion the driver of the pick-up, Derrick Hadra of Mount Carmel, Illinois, said he did not see the slow moving vehicle until a semi in front of him moved into the passing lane .. and it was too late to slow down.

Hadra was taken to Gibson General Hospital and was last reported to be in good condition.

He was cited for driving with a suspended license, unsafe speed and following too close.

The driver of the tractor, John Nowaskie of Nowaskie Farms, was not injured.

The highway was closed for about one-hour while the accident was investigated and the smashed watermelons cleaned up.
