Secretary of State Found Guilty on 6 Felony Counts

A Hamilton County jury has found Charlie White guilty on six of the seven felony charges against him.

The jury handed up the verdict at 2:20 Saturday morning after deliberating for about 10 hours.

Shortly after the verdict, Governor Mitch Daniels named Jerry Bonnet Interim Secretary of State.

Bonnet had been serving as chief deputy.

The governor says a permanent appointment depends on whether judge Steve Nation will lessen White’s conviction on some of the counts to misdemeanors.

Such a move may allow White to be reinstated to office.

The jury convicted White for submitting a false voter registration application, two perjury counts, voting in another precinct, casting a false ballot and theft.

The jury found white not guilty of the most serious felony charge, fraud on a financial institution.

Following the verdict, White said he was disappointed by the verdict for himself and his family and will review his options.
He says he’s uncertain about the status of his job.

Meantime, prosecutors John Dowd and Dj Sigler Jr. say White knowingly broke the law and got caught.

They say White should be sentenced in accordance with his current felony convictions and not altered counts.

In addition, Democratic Attorney Karen Celestino-Horseman says her party will continue seek a way to get Vop Osili installed as Secretary of State.

Osili lost the Secretary of State Election to White.

Judge Nation is expected to set a sentencing date and address the verdict sometime next week.
