Loogootee Man Charged with Rape now Faces Habitual Offender Charge

A Loogootee man charged with Rape and Criminal Confinement in Knox County now faces a habitual offender charge.

That means 30-year-old Mitchel Cunningham faces up to 60-years in prison if convicted on all charges.

Cunningham appeared for his initial hearing Wednesday in Knox County Superior Court-One.

A preliminary plea of not guilty was entered on Cunningham's behalf and his case set for trial in November.

After receiving some help from the public, Vincennes Police arrested Cunningham earlier this month in connection with a rape that occurred on June 29th.

The habitual offender charge was filed due to Cunningham's earlier conviction on charges of theft, burglary, and fraud on a financial institution in Owen County.

Cunningham's bond was increased from $25,000 to $50,000 Wednesday as required under the state's habitual offender statute.
