It's been interesting watching the grass roots movement of the people that are concerned about a proposed carbon dioxide sequestration project. They staged their first meeting last week at the Hardinville Community Center with a trio of speakers. Now they're planning to have another meeting on the 14th at the Robinson Community Center. State Senator Dale Righter and State Representative Roger Eddy are hosting the meeting.
In the meantime, the group is working to lobby members of the Illinois Senate Energy Committee. They're concerned about SB3758, which would create the Carbon Dioxide Geologic Storage Act. The bill is on the slate for the committee's hearing Thursday morning. Some locals are planning to make the trip to Springfield and they've been working the phones in an effort to get others to call members of the committee.
It is nice to see passionate people fighting for a local cause. Too often local meetings are poorly attended and people react when it is too late. Certainly, there's good reason for people to get passionate about politics on a national level, but it is the more local levels where people can really make a difference.
