Illinois Senate Passes Education Funding Bill

A bill changing the way the Illinois funds public education passed the senate Tuesday evening.

The legislation created a new funding formula directing money to schools not based on enrollment figures, but on need.

That means more state money would go to the state’s poorer districts.

But Senator Matt Murphy of Palatine points out that residents in districts getting less aid under the new system would have to make up the difference.

The bill now moves to the house for a vote.

The legislature is scheduled to adjourn the spring session on Saturday.
