Local emergency workers are preparing for an earthquake this week, but how prepared are you? Over 100 local, state and federal agencies in all are taking part in the drill that simulates a catastrophic earthquake in Southern Illinois. The basic idea is to test earthquake plans in place to see what improvements are needed.
In the meantime, how prepared are you for a disaster? One of the simplest things you can do is prepare a 72-hour disaster supply kit. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency has put together a downloadable flyer that you can use to put your kit together. They also have another brochure you can use to start your family communication plan.
Preparedness is important. Just think how quickly stores start to run out of things whenever there's a threat of snow or ice. If there was a disaster, would you want to hope you can find what you need? If a severe earthquake happened, it could take days before supplies could reach the area.
